November is National Family Caregivers Month.

I know firsthand the responsibilities of becoming an effective family caregiver and family care partner.
I will encourage family caregivers to:
- Attend workshops to learn ‘how to become an effective caregiver and/or care partner’
- Learn about your family members diagnosis
- Communicate effectively with your family members healthcare providers – doctor, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, etc.
- Get Organized
- Schedule doctor appointments, schedule transportation or provide transportation, prepare meals, assist with meals, plus administer medications as prescribed
- Check their vitals signs daily (temperature, blood pressure, etc.)
- Check their skin (notice swelling and skin changes)
- Speak with a Financial Advisor
- Learn how to purchase Long-Term Care Insurance
- Join a support group or start a support group
- Take care of your physical and mental health – Find ways to relax
- Receive counseling if necessary
- Know when you need help • Don’t do it alone
- Hire additional help • Hire in-home caregivers
- Contact your local Area Agency on Aging for information and available resources
- Learn how to find a good Assistive Living and Memory Care Facility in your area
- Make your family member feel loved
- Provide the best medical care for your family member
According to dementia care expert Teepa Snow, “a caregiver gives care, while a care partner partners in care.”
I was a family caregiver and family care partner.
